About team

The Magic FC is the name of the ABC Motsepe team that is part of the Old Mutual Football Club.  The team is based in Pinelands and trains and plays home matches at Old Mutual Sports Club.

The 2nd Division franchise was bought and coached by former Bafana Bafana player George Dearnaley in June 2012 (finishing 12th out of 16!) and played for 2 seasons under the Old Mutual name.  The Head coach was former Bafana Bafana striker Gerald Stober, assisted by Dearnaley and the team finished 11th in 2014 and 10th in 2015 – steady progress!

We requested to play under the trademarked name ‘The Magic FC’ due to a lack of sponsorship (hard to get from other corporates when you are called Old Mutual!) ahead of the 2014/15 season.  In our 1st season as The Magic, the team finished 10th in the league and went on a great run in the Nedbank Cup resulting in The Magic winning both the ABC Motsepe W. Cape Nedbank Cup final beating Zizwe at their home ground in Nyanga, and the Western Cape Nedbank Cup overall, defeating Maties in the Provincial final at their home ground in Stellenbosch.

The Magic were then drawn against PSL team Platinum Stars in the last 32 but were well beaten 3-0 by the professional team in Rustenburg live on SABC1.  The game was watched by an estimated TV audience of just over 6 million people!  Magic really happens.

Stober left The Magic at the end of the 2015/16 season to focus on his business.  The team had finished 9th making steady progress season after season.   He had built a team that had a reputation for playing attacking football and that worked hard for each other and had the best team spirit in the league.

Dearnaley took over the coaching for the 2016/17 season, ably assisted by Keegan Walker and Zane Alexander.  Miles October became a partner in the team and took over as Chairman and with his great work behind the scenes, Dearnaley could focus on coaching.  The team finished a very respectable 4th in the league but were still way off the pace and a massive 17 points behind champions Zizwe United.

Last season (2017/2018) Dearnaley continued in the head coaching role, with assistants Keegan Walker and Zane Alexander.  Zane Ryklief also joined the team and after Walker left for a coaching position in Qatar, former Bafana Bafana star David Kannemeyer joined the coaching team for the last few months.  The team finished 2nd in what was a great achievement, only 7 points behind champions Steenberg United, who also beat us in the local Cup final.  On the individual side, striker Therlo Moosa finished as the leagues top scorer with 24 goals (+ 2 in the cup).

THE MAGIC FC IS A TEAM THAT FOCUSES ON TECHNIQUE AND TRIES TO PLAY FOOTBALL  WITH DISCIPLINE AND GOOD ORGANISATION.  WE BELIEVE IN KEEPING THE BALL.
