Match Report

The Magic travelled to the Robinvale Sports complex in Atlantis on Friday 7th September to take on local team Jomos Power, who were in great spirits after recording their first league win of the season on Wednesday the 5th, beating FN Rangers 1-0 in Cape Town.

The Magic had won all 4 of their games of the season to date and started the game in the best possible manner.  17-year old debutant Leo Mert scored within 2 minutes of the start, putting the ball in the net after the goalkeeper couldnt handle a stinging cross from Thurlow Wood.  Only 3 minutes later and it was 2-0 to the away team, this time Wood became goalscorer, rifling home from outside the area after good work by Gregory Roelf and Therlo Moosa.  The home team didn’t know what hit them, but slowly tried to get back into the game and resorted to some really aggressive tackling and in some cases they were lucky their violent conduct was not spotted or punished by the officials.  Therlo Moosa then scored his 5th goal of the campaign by sliding in at the far post and finishing a great cross by Dante Lamb after good work by Tera Mapukata and Leo Mert.  3-0 at half time.

Jomo’s Power came out firing in the 2nd half and after some sloppy defending at a free kick they pulled a goal back less than 10 minutes into the 2nd half.  The goal rattled The Magic and the combination of violent tackling and aggressive football paid dividends when they scored a 2nd goal 20 minutes into the half to make the scored 3-2.  But their violent and physical approach was eventually punished and their captain was sent off for a combination of foul and abusive language as well as violent conduct.  He had been lucky to stay on the field after throwing a punch in the 1st half that was not seen by the officials.  Now facing only 10 men, The Magic regathered their composure and started to carve openings even though chances were few and far between, but ‘Gregorinho’ Roelf put the game beyond doubt when he finished spectacularly with a near post daisy-cutter with only a few minutes left.  3 more valuable points, 4 goals scored but at a cost with injuries to 2 players and a 3rd player having to go to hospital for scans after being concussed during the game.
