The team travelled to Beaufort West on Friday morning to take on 2nd placed Royal Blues. The 7:30pm kick off was brought forward to 6pm due to load shedding which was a small disruption as we only arrived just after 4pm.
The team adjusted to the hot conditions and we started the 1st half fairly well but without creating too much going forwards. Greg Roelf had to be substituted 30 mins into the half after a freak accident when he collided with a metal pole 2 meters from the edge of the pitch. Despite some of the poor decisions that were given against we slowly got on top and created 2 great chances just before half time but couldn’t finish them.
We started the 2nd half with more aggression and a better tempo and took the lead with a Therlo Moosa header after great work by Danian Warley.
Our goal got the local crowd going which seemed to influence the local officials and it was no surprise when the linesman and referee combined to award a penalty a few minutes later for what was clearly a ball kicked against our defenders thigh from 1 metre away. Justice was done when keeper Jaleel Johnson saved the weak spot kick.
But the pressure was on and every counter attack was blown for offsides by a whistle happy official who was happy to listen to the local crowds advice.
With time running out Shaheed Abrahams was kicked and injured in front of the linesman but the officials played on and from their resulting long throw in Blues scored an equalizer after poor defending at the near post.
It was the 7th penalty awarded against us in Beaufort West in 7 seasons.
The local supporters congratulated us for getting a point.
